i've downloaded the free version installed it and tried running it and it says windows llive messenger has stopped working windows is searching for a solution but none show up what do i do?

Make sure your installation of Vista is the final version and not a beta version. Download any updates for it via the Windows Updates in the Control Panel.
Make sure you've downloaded the most up-to-date version of Windows Live Messenger. I assure you it will work with Vista.

Downgrade back to Windows XP and wait until microsoft fixes the many bugs of Vista. There are a lot of programs that are not working with Vista at the moment. If you do not want to downgrade, then contact microsoft customer service and tell them about your issue. Based on my experience with their customer service, get ready for the run around. Hopefully it is a better experience for you.
