go to tools on the menu bar

I am guessing that there is a "check box" next to "Always on top"

Click on it (if you click tools again you should not see the check box)

This method will not minimize the msn window but msn will run behind the window you are working on.

What exactly has it stopped doing? When you click a window behind it, it brings it to the front and puts the messenger window behind the web browser. In some cases it may minimalize and you can't see it. When you need to see your contact list if you can't see anything in the main screen, do the following:

1. RIGHT click the icon in the system tray

2. Select and click the opion which allows you to view your contact list/messenger window.

There may even be an option which says, "Keep this window on top" which keeps messenger on top of any other window or application you have running.

What you are calling "shrinking" is probably minimalizing...as in it disappears from the screen all except for the small system tray icon in the lower right corner, near the clock.
