When i first made my gamertag in entered the Windows Live account i had at that time (which was "...@hotmail.com) Now i have a new account (which is "...@live.com) how can i change it so that is the Windows Live associated with my XBOX Live account?

Hi I just got msn messenger awhile ago and when i go to open it it says sorry Windows was not able to open program.5 seconds later this icon pops up in the task bar saying widows has found a solution so you click on it and it says something about Data Excursion Prevention (DEP) and how it can't open it because of it (it doesn't have a answer it just tells you whats wrong) Please Help!!

Honestly you only need windows live messenger because it allows yahoo, hotmail, msn to all talk together. I think cogeco, sympatico, etc aswell.

On my computer, Yahoo Messenger takes up 25.72 MB and Windows Live takes up 30.28 MB. Neither of them slow my computer down and I usually have them running at the same time. I prefer Yahoo solely because that is the one I have used the most and that's what most of my friends use.

it doesnt have to do with the installation and you dont need any patches to make it work it has to do with your computer check the requirements that it takes to install WLM and make sure you fit them all.. and if you do if you have a security system you may need to fix that also

Its only a minor niggle, but in the past two days when I open live messenger the display pictures for me and my partner have disappeared, as soon as I open messenger then there they are, and if on the log in screen I select the 'Show menu bar' option then the picture is there, if not then all I see is the username and password boxes, does anyone know why this is happening and how to rectify it?

This keeps happening to me and my friend as well, I don't really know what you could do.. seeing you already un-installed it and re-installed it.. perhaps you can try one of the old versions like 7.5 or something and see what it does.. sorry my answer isn't much help - I'll be checking back, because like I said this is happening to me as well.. Go to "Start", "Search" and select "All Files And Folders" and type in the name of the file and it should tell you where it is. I don't understand the rest of your question? Are you trying to send a file via messenger? If so, 20Mb is too large to send this way.

I did some research on this and found out MSN Messenger can only accept up to 2Mb size files. All files above are NOT downloaded to your computer......that is why you cannot find them.......they aint there. I hope this answers your question.

go to msn.com and click on Contact Us and tell them about it. i know, it says it's Windows Live Messenger, but it's a service from msn so they should be able to help you. if that doesn't work, then you might need to uninstall and then reinstall it. if THAT doesn't work, then do System Restore back to 3 months when it DID work. hope i helped!

There have been loads of bugs reported for this new live messenger i have had that numerous times i also get my firewall going crazy and it stops me from accessing anything else on the internet and just freezes up for about 15 seconds whilst im typing away in the messenger.

This needs a little clarification but I am assuming you are talking about the shortcut icon?

If so, all you need to do is Double Click My Computer to open it, then look on your harddrive icon (Normally C:).

Double click C: drive icon and look for PROGRAMS file and open that.

Look for the file titled MESSENGER and open that.

You should see the classic two blue people symbol so RIGHT CLICK on that and then HOVER on SEND TO and then select DESKTOP (CREATE SHORTCUT).

You should then be able to close everything and find the icon on your desktop.

I have a windows xp home edition 2003 compter. I have looked up everything on control panel and there is nothing to prevent the problem. What Should i do?

Easiest way to do it.. go to control panel, then add/remove programs.. click the button on the left that says 'windows components' and take the check out of messenger..

If you don't want to completely uninstall it, then you can go to start, run.. type in gpedit.msc and press enter. On the next screen, click the plus sign on 'Administrative Templates', under 'User configuration'. Then click the plus sign next to 'Windows Components'. Double click the one that says 'Windows Messenger". On the right, the second one will say 'Do not automatically start messenger' Double click on that one, the click the box that says 'Enabled'.. then click ok, and exit..
This is actually NOT a problem or the reason your computer is slow.. But if you do want to keep it from starting up automaticly, then go thru the Messenger's task bar under tools, and click options. When the options window comes up under "General" unclick all the boxes that Automatically start your Windows Live Messenger.
The messenger even after being uninstalled remains in the computer. to permanentaly delete it first remove it from add/remove programs in control panel and then in program files folder in c: there is a folder messenger. delete it.

Downgrade back to Windows XP and wait until microsoft fixes the many bugs of Vista. There are a lot of programs that are not working with Vista at the moment. If you do not want to downgrade, then contact microsoft customer service and tell them about your issue. Based on my experience with their customer service, get ready for the run around. Restart the computer, and then if that doesn't work check your internet cable-ish things. Can you open any other IM services you have like AIM or google talk? If so then it's just a problem with msn.

The best purchase I ever made for my computer was "Spy Sweeper" They catch things coming in before they can cause trouble. I love the contact search field where I can just type a few letters of my friend's name and quickly start a conversation with them. You can even do this from anywhere else on your computer just by typing Windows key +Y. Really cool!

When I send my webcam in MSN I get a perfect picture in my view, but the other person sees a really crappy image. I've tried adding myself to MSN and viewing it myself and I still get the perfect image on the sending end, but the really crappy image on the recieving end.

you will have to live with it since some websites have issues with the codecs for audio and video which is one of the reasons for this.

I can't share files on Windows Live with anyone who has a Yahoo! email address. I have no problem sharing with AOL, or MSN and Hotmail addresses. I can't figure out how to share files. I have checked and made sure that my firewall allows this program as well as making sure share files are allowed. As I already mentioned just my one yahoo.com address is not able to share. it might be that u have got to much space in ur hard drive in your laptop...so try and delete a couple of things that u dont wont (pictures,programs,videos etc)

Most windows programs get stubborn if you don't have enough space, or if you already have it downloaded, but not 'installed'. Go into the 'Control Panel' and UNINSTALL Live Messenger, if you see it there as an option, or REPAIR, if it gives you that option. Then Re-Install. Thats so bad.I think it could be because of the settings in your internet options.This could cause your computer to reject download of some programme materials into your computers.

Just click on [TOOLS] on the menu bar then go to [INTERNET OPTIONS] ,[ADVANCED] and re-examine your settings.

Msn messenger is like a trojan. It is certainly a great security risk and should be handeled with care.

But to download and use msn is not dangerous in it self. Depending on your computers performance it can slow you down a little or a lot. But it should not affect new computers too much.

Everything microsoft does is dangerous and slows your computer down anyways so what can we do...

When I first downloaded MSN live messenger, it was alright, but it made the Mbps a little bit slower than normal.

It was back to normal in a few days but I do not think it will make it shut down especially if it is a XP/2000/Vista computer. If it is Windows 98,97 or 95 it could have achance as it cannot be as compatiable with the computer operating systems.
It will do no harm as long as you open files (when you're transferring them through msn with friends) from people you trust + make sure you know what they're sending you. it might slow you down when you're first logging in, but that's only because it's setting up your contacts and organising who's online or not.

On my network we have multiple users using Live Messenger. It is fine for inter-office communication, but the employees often spend the day talking to friends and family outside of work. Have you tried contacting customer service. They are pretty good with results.
Find the winhttp.dll file in "my documents" open it, run it.. then try re-installing msn messenger... also try system restore and go back as far as you can...... make sure you virus scan EVERYTHING you download before you open it.....

If there's virus on your computer, do as the following:

1.Restart computer, Press F8 to enter Safe mode, clear the files in the temp folder:

i.C:\Wihdows\Temp

ii.C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Temp

(user name is various in different computer)

iii.(IE7)right click on Internet Explorer, chose properties/General/Browsing history/Delete/Delete All

iv. restart computer normally

remove the program with add remove programs then use the search box in your start menu to search for msn messenger in all files and folders. right click on anything it finds and select open containing folder, when it opens then just drag the highlighted file to the recycle bin.

repeat ths with all found files until you have been through them all.

Just make sure the file contains the word messenger in it otherwise don't delete.

after you get rid of the lot restart, then re-download and install messenger.

You should have no problems if you are thorough..

This could be difficult because I think that version is no longer being distributed w/ current versions of windows.

Do a search for it online, if you can not download it then goto someone who has it and email the executable to yourself. It will probably be something like messenger.exe.

Depends on your internet speed and connection. If you have a like a mobile dial-up card; prone to disconnection, then go to a DSL or LAN then transfer to your computer. If you use dial up, then yes it can take over an hour. Even some broadbands can be very slow too. Go back to msn.com download from there, and just be patient.

How can I remediate error "80072f78" on Windows Live Messenger 8.0?

The error comes up upon sign in... the firewall isn't the problem, as on my wired LAN connection the sign in is fine. However, upon connecting to an open wireless connection, Live Messenger suddenly fails to sign in.

The troubleshoot section fails to help, nor can I find any remedies for this specific problem anywhere on the internet. Most websites seem to link to another website which apparently has the remedy, but has nothing of the sort.

Can anybody help with this at all? I'm sure it may be a connection problem, but I have no permissions to be able to configure the wireless connection, due to it being a public access university connection.

My Advice Is Simple

Stop running windoze messenger and get MSN back

Did you have windows live before you got the Yahoo Browser? You might have to load Windows Live Messenger Through the Yahoo Browser. I have no trouble with WLM, use it for the most serious communications I have.

gee, windows is not in the business of making instant messengers, they do operating systems! as for msn im, it does not have the best features. yahoo messenger 8 does. you will see that when you download it (yes, you can do that even while you have that lousy program still on) and look at preferences. i find it so handy to archive all of my online chats. that's in case i go out on a date and disappear. the coppers will take my box and examine it. that's only ONE advantage, there are many, many more.

don't use one of those combined messenger thingies yet: they are not developed, have too many problems, and will drive you nuts.

be sure to save your buddy list. i suggest you use what everyone else feels is really good, which is yahoo messenger and forget this windows baloney.

It sounds like you mean you were comprimised by password stealing malware rather than Microsoft Hotmail was "hacked".

This can happen a couple ways. Look up "keylogger" which is malware that transmits your every keystroke (everything you type) back to the cyber criminal(s) on the other end. Here would be they captured your password.

There was a recent Java exploit in Firefox browser that was stealing passwords. Update to latest version of Firefox. Also update to the latest version of Java at click %26gt; Start %26gt; Control Panel %26gt; Java Console ...... open it and click Update. Also set that to Automatic Updates.

There are viruses that steal passwords and other malwares. Generally in these cases it is strongly recommended to secure your computer immediately without out further sessions until then by full scans with quality shareware security software (paid antivirus, and antispyware). If you do not have paid subscription security software already in place - then before attempting any personal or finacial transactions to do so you should grab up the free home versions and do full system scans. Both antivirus and antispyware programs are absolutely imperitive in breaches of personal information. With full scans completed with malware removed - then and only then should you move to change all your current passwords to strong passwords at least 6 or more characters mixed with numbers and alphabetic characters. Then you should immediately purchase quality antivirus and antispyware and a firewall. Without these general methods you are wide open to all this ocurring again and again.

Free security software does not have real time protection activated with the only exception of the free Microsoft Windows Defender antispyware with real time protection and active shields. Real time protection protects 24/7 from these type malwares from installing. If they were downloaded as bundled in some bad software - if activated they will be detected immediately by the paid subscription software or be found in a normal scan before being activated and quarantined or deleted.

So, do a full scan with antivirus and antispyware. Quarantine or delete what is determined as a virus or keylogger or other malware. Change all your passwords and install paid subscription security software. End of story. Mzake sure you Update to latest Defintions in the security software before scanning. It must have the latest up to date signature defintions to identify all threats.

One other possibility is that you were duped into a "phisher site" which is a fake website that looks almost exactly like the real one which transmits your password and any other information from the session immediately to the cyber criminlas on the other end. There was a Yahoo site like that I believe not too long ago for one. This was part of the reasons for all the improvements to Internet Explorer Version 7 which includes anti-phisher technology. Earthlink had one of the original Anti Scam toolbars and works for Firefox browsers - warns of fake websites. It is strongly recommended to be operating at Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Internet Explorer 7 for your Windows Operating System (OS). This is the most secure and optimum performance versions aside from newer Vista OS.

See Free Online Virus and Spyware Scans and also the free home versions of antivirus and antispyware at these sites listed and do the full scans until you are told you are not infected and then go about securing your computer with paid software. If you can't do that online then there is another option of grabbing the Webroot suite package of antivirus, antispyware and firewall at a Computer store likie BestBuy or Staples for instance. Webroot Spysweeper has consistently been rated in the world's top three for years and has recently put together the Suite which includes special pc Sophos antivirus which is a top award winning enterprise level antivirus winning the top VB100 Award for antivirus and also includes a firewall. If you can disable the firewall then get the free Comodo Firewall which is top rated in penetration tests and is unbelievably completely free and see their website for why - no strings. The Webroot package is on the inexpensive side I believe currently at $40 compared to $70 for others.

So my answer is that you asked the wrong question in that there is no "secure network" that can prevent this. They are the server side and you are the client side. It is a client side problem - virus infection or spyware most likely is the answer. However, recently or perhaps going back two years now or more even in some cases - web destinations have added more Log In security encryption and Hotmail was one of the very first. When you log onto a Secure Site you see the little security icon on the browser (lock) showing that you are logging in on a Secure Site. This is most common at any finacial website. You will now see that at many web based email destinations like Yahoo Email. You fill in your User Name and Password and when you click 'Enter' you will see the little security icon (lock) on the browser briefly as you enter. This shows that your password was encrypted. I am quite certain Hotmail has this and was one of the first who also was one of the first to give options to "Block Pictures and Graphics" from displaying unless clicked OK if you knew and trusted the source - as jpeg (pictures) where comprimised by virus insertions and was a major overhaul also in Outlook Express by Microsoft for the same. Now all ISPs are doing it because of viruses embedded in pictures. So taking all that into consideration, I would definately assume this was a client side breach is my advice I give to you. Do the full scans first, remove the malwares, and get protected with paid quality security software.

You simply have to make firefox the default browser, so that external links will open with firefox.

Ok, you're right, i use Opera, but made FF my default browser and opened couple of links on WLM, and yes they do open in internet explorer. I really think there's nothing you can do about this. It's programmed into WLM to open links in internet explorer even when its not your default browser. I also went under WLM options , and couldn't find one that'd let me open the links in the default browser. However, i hope in future versions WLM will let us open the links in our default browsers, or at least put a preference which lets us do so.

Try in both... Mine seemed to also work both places. To try it on the name field, click Tools, Options and look in the 'my display name' field.
