I have done this before but have forgotten how

How do I replace the windows messenger button on the ie explorer toolbar for the windows live messenger buttonwindows xp

You should be able to right-click on your Toolbar area and go to Customize Buttons. You can remove the Windows Messenger button and then add the Live Messenger button, assuming it's already installed.
